What Is the Spiral Abyss?

The Spiral Abyss is Genshin Impact's primary endgame challenge — a 12-floor gauntlet where you fight waves of enemies under strict time limits. Floors 9–12 reset every two weeks and award Primogems for clearing chambers with 3 stars. Floors 1–8 are permanent and serve as practice floors.

Many players find themselves stuck on Floors 10–12 despite having leveled-up characters. The Abyss isn't just about raw power — strategy, team composition, and understanding the meta all play huge roles.

Tip 1: Build Two Distinct Teams

Floors 9–12 require two separate teams — one for each half of every floor. The single biggest mistake players make is dumping all their best characters into Team 1 and leaving Team 2 underpowered.

  • Plan your roster as two complete teams from the start.
  • Each team needs a DPS, a sub-DPS, a healer or shielder, and a flex/support slot.
  • Avoid placing both your top healers (e.g., Bennett and Jean) on the same team.

Tip 2: Read the Ley Line Disorders

Every Abyss cycle comes with Ley Line Disorders — passive buffs that apply to specific floors. These can massively amplify certain damage types or reactions. For example, a disorder that boosts Pyro DMG by 75% is essentially a free invitation to run a Pyro team on that floor.

Before building your teams for a new cycle, read the current disorders carefully and align your team choices around them. This alone can let an average roster outperform a stronger one that ignores the mechanic.

Tip 3: Prioritize Artifact Main Stats Over Substats

Many players stall in the Abyss because they're farming for perfect sub-stats while using wrong main stats. The priority should always be:

  1. Correct main stats (HP%/ATK%/CRIT on the right pieces)
  2. Correct set bonuses (4-piece where possible)
  3. Good sub-stats (CRIT Rate, CRIT DMG, ATK%, ER)

A 4-piece set with mediocre sub-stats almost always beats a perfectly sub-statted 2-piece combination.

Tip 4: Level Talents, Not Just Characters

Character level is the most visible number, but talent levels often have a larger impact on damage. If your DPS character is level 90 but has level 1 talents, you're leaving enormous damage on the table.

  • Prioritize the main damage talent first (Normal Attack for most DPS, Elemental Skill or Burst for others).
  • Aim for talent level 8–9 before pushing to 10, as the cost jump at 10 is significant.
  • Don't neglect support talents — Xingqiu's Burst, for example, is his primary damage source.

Tip 5: Learn Enemy Attack Patterns

The Abyss punishes reactivity and rewards preparation. Many deaths happen not because characters are too weak, but because the player gets hit by avoidable attacks.

  • Ruin Guards: Dodge when their eye glows — hit them in the eye with a charged shot to stagger them.
  • Fatui Skirmishers: Destroy their shields with the correct element before dealing damage.
  • Consecrated Beasts: Watch for their stomp and dash — create distance immediately.
  • General rule: Watch one YouTube clear of the current Abyss floor before attempting it. Knowing what's coming is half the battle.

Bonus: Energy Recharge Matters More Than You Think

In a timed challenge, being unable to burst every rotation is a significant DPS loss. Make sure your supports and sub-DPS characters have enough Energy Recharge to burst on cooldown. General targets:

  • Bennett: ~160–180% ER
  • Xingqiu: ~180–200% ER (without a Favonius sword)
  • Fischl: ~120–130% ER

The Abyss is challenging by design, but it's also fair. With two solid teams, the right artifacts, and some floor knowledge, the 3-star clear is absolutely within reach for most players at Adventure Rank 45 and above.
